The film begins in a secluded basement, where the criminal Lorenzo Vitale (Bruno Pilotto) arrives with his young son. All his men are killed and the survivor is afraid of the force that killed his colleagues. Lorenzo goes to the basement where he finds a lonely Robert McCauley (Washington) who gives him exactly nine seconds to hand over the keys to the safe.
Unsurprisingly, Lorenzo doesn't listen and he and his men pay with their lives. As he takes everything he wants from the safe and leaves the basement, Lorenzo's son unexpectedly shoots Roberta in the back. An injured Robert reaches the continent before passing out in his car. He is found by the policeman Gio (Eugenio Mastrandrea) who takes him to the town doctor Enzo (Remo Girone).
While Enzo heals him, Robert begins to bond with the village of Altamonte and its residents, including bar owner Amina (Jay Scodelaro) and fishmonger Angelo. The picturesque village has some problems with the Chamber, led by brothers Marco (Andrea Daddero) and Vincent (Andrea Scardzio). Now Robert just has to intervene and restore peace to the good people of Altamonte.
Meanwhile, Robert joins the CIA investigation after informing CIA agent Emma Collins (Dakota Fanning) of an illegal drug operation that Lorenzo smuggled from the basement.
Fierce and sexy
Throughout his ten-year career, Denzel Washington was not known for starring in consecutive films. Playing Robert McCall, not once, but twice, shows how important this franchise (and working with Fuqua) is to him. And it clearly shows how many nuances it adds to his personality. While Robert McCall is terrifying (and the murder scenes are reminiscent of slasher films), he is also a good man desperate for redemption.
Equalizer 3 is a decent feature. The villains are evil enough to ensure that the audience doesn't sympathize with them when they take revenge, the kill scenes (none of which can be called fight scenes) are comfortable, and the spectacle is amazing. It has all the elements we've come to expect from the franchise and is a fun watch.
It would be better if the other characters had some depth. And the movie could have been made without the CIA plot. It felt like the filler was written at the last minute to give Dakota Fanning something to do, and I found those parts boring. This complicated a story that worked perfectly without the CIA story.
However, the film offers plenty of action, violence, and Denzel Washington at his best to make up for the less exciting scenes. On top of all that, The Equalizer 3 has the perfect cinematography that only Oscar winner Robert Richardson could achieve, even making the gory shots artistic. It's worth seeing on the big screen just for the graphics alone.
