Rating Movies I BingeWatched During The Summer
The opinions expressed in this article are those of the author and do not reflect the views of his campus.
To end the summer, I decided it was only right to do so by talking about all the movies I saw during this period. During typical school semesters, I usually don't have the time or the intellectual capacity to consume new content, so summer provides the perfect opportunity to watch what I want. Since I'm a writer for your campus, I can talk about it, because why not? I did it last year too, but for show (oh how time flies!) And if you're interested in this article, you can read it here on this site. Without further ado, here are some of the movies I saw during the summer season and if I had the chance, I would definitely write essays on each movie because I have so many opinions on everything.
- Tales of Princess Kaguya – 5/10
Although I have a special place for Studio Ghibli movies, this one wasn't my favorite. The film follows the life of a nymph born from a bamboo stalk, who is then raised by a bamboo cutter and his wife. The animation in this movie is unique and beautiful (as expected from Studio Ghibli), but I wasn't a big fan of the plot. The movie constantly frustrated me with the way the characters behaved and I didn't like the characters in the movie so much that it frustrated me. Overall I liked the animation of the movie, but not the movie itself.
- Gucci's house – 7.5/10
The film is a biography of Patrizia Reggiani (played by icon Lady Gaga) and her life after her marriage to the Gucci family. Before seeing the film, I had seen a few clips online and had expectations of the film. In my opinion, the movie was interesting and well-paced, and the backstory in some scenes was amazing. Lady Gaga's outfits were also very beautiful to look at, and the movie as a whole looked very aesthetically pleasing. However, the movie fell a little short of my expectations, but maybe that's my fault for setting the bar too high. I also watched the movie on a plane flying back to Canada from South Korea, so maybe I was too tired to process the movie properly.
- turn red – 10.10
Animated movies hold a special place in my heart and Turning Red was no exception. The film is about a Chinese-Canadian girl, Mei Lee, who inherits a family curse that turns into a giant red panda when she experiences strong emotions. As you would expect from Pixar, this movie made me laugh, cry, cry and think my whole life in less than 2 hours. The plot touches me and there were a lot of things about the protagonist's journey that I could relate to. I may be a little biased towards the movie because of its Asian portrayal, but the movie was truly a masterpiece.
- the black phone – 8.5/10
Instagram's algorithm showed me a lot of reviews on this movie and it got high ratings and I agree the movie deserves the publicity. Based on a short story of the same name, The Black Phone is about Finney Shaw, who is kidnapped and held captive in a basement. A black phone hangs on the basement wall and Finney realizes he can hear the voices of former victims. The film doesn't overdo the jumps and the scary scenes are well timed. The plot is good except for the ending which seems a bit rushed. I'm not a horror fan, but this movie is worth watching.
- Thor: Love and Thunder - 7.5/10
There were many times when this movie felt like a parody of the first three movies, but I still enjoyed it. I guess I had too high expectations so I didn't enjoy it as much as I thought. What I loved about Thor: Love and Thunder was that it introduced Jane Foster and other characters that weren't in Thor: Ragnarok. The cinematography was good and aesthetically pleasing, but it wasn't my favorite in the franchise. I didn't particularly like the characters' costumes either because I thought they were too flashy (?). I don't think this movie was exceptional and deserves a lot of praise, but it was fun and sometimes that's all I want from a movie. Even though I didn't like this movie, I still think it was a good movie that ended well with the Thor movie franchise.
- dog – 4/10
Normally I would give any movie with a dog 10/10, but this movie was so boring I couldn't bring myself to give it more than 4/10. The Dog is about an army ranger, Jackson Briggs, who is tasked with getting his fallen comrade's military dog to his funeral on time. Lulu the dog struggles with aggressive behavior, and Briggs must learn to work with Lulu so he can attend his friend's funeral. The film was quite moving and I broke down in tears several times, but I still found it a bit boring. In today's world originality is basically dead and everything is basically an imitation or inspiration from something else. Personally, I don't see a problem with that, but I don't think Dog brought anything new to the table. Honestly, it felt like a movie people would only see once just because it featured a cute dog and Channing Tatum.
