The Final ‘The Marvels Trailer Is Transparently Desperate
Marvel is gearing up for an impact as it's shaping up to be one of the MCU's biggest box office bombs, regardless of the quality of the film. It's the wrong movie at the wrong time for the MCU, and early sales are putting it below DC's disastrous The Flash .
So Marvel and Disney are now sending it all off. And by that, I mean the release of a "final" trailer for a movie that looks so obviously hopeless, it's painful to watch. I say this not as a weirdo Brie Larson hater, but as someone who can't wait for the movie (more specifically, Iman Vellani as Kamala).
The trailer puts a light touch on old scenes and seems to be trying to make it a direct sequel to Avengers Endgame. It opens with some scenes of Tony Stark and Steve Rogers, both of whom have left the MCU, following their final battle against Thanos and reminding us that yes, Captain Marvel is there too.
But this isn't just embarrassing nostalgia fodder, Marvel is now content to spoil some plot points and scenes to sell more tickets. Specifically, a trailer that directly introduces never-before-seen multiverse integration. There's also a scene from Tessa Thompson's previously unknown film Valkyrie. And finally, we have the Avengers theme under the title card. shy
It all fits the narrative that it's going to be bad, and Marvel knows it's going to be bad. This includes the MCU's Disney Plus movies and shows like Captain Marvel 1, WandaVision, Ms. A surprise and stealth invasion, all serving as the "next scapegoat."
There was a long-standing grand plan that the "descendants" of the MCU's central Tony/Steve/Thor trio would be Black Panther, Captain Marvel, and Spider-Man. This was brought to light by the tragic death of Chadwick Boseman, followed by an insane online hate campaign against Brie Larson that disenfranchised him from the role, making him the only player in limbo at the time.
Plans were changed because Marx thought it wouldn't work. Disney Plus shows are shortened or become stand-alone projects that don't require knowledge of the MCU to enjoy. Margel's biggest challenge right now is figuring out what to do with Major Kang and Jon Nathan, but after that the future looks brighter with the Fantastic Four and the X-Ray Men.
It's not going to be great, box office wise, but I hope at least the movie itself is good, and it's a shame that they pulled the plug on it before it aired. Inspection will be done soon.
