Joy Ride Bluray Review: A Hilarious Movie Worth Owning

Joy Ride, one of the funniest R-rated comedies in recent history, is now available on Blu-ray. Directed by actors Ashley Park, Sherry Cole, Everything Everywhere and Stephanie Hsu and Sabrina Wu, all Asian, this film offers hilarious comedy and heartfelt friendship. Although I enjoyed the movie in the theater, I found it funnier after watching it again.

“At the heart of this fun and heartfelt story of identity and self-discovery are four unlikely friends who embark on the international adventure of a lifetime. When Audrey's (Ashley Park) business trip to Asia doesn't go well, she turns to Lol (Sherri Cole), her irreverent childhood best friend, for help. Kat (Stephanie Hsu), his college friend, becomes a Chinese soap opera star. and Dedai (Sabrina Wu), Lola's cousin,” the synopsis says. "Their epic, limitless journey will be a journey of connection, friendship, belonging and adventure that will uncover universal truths about what it means to know and love yourself."

Despite supporting performances from Barron Davis and Daniel Dae Kim, it's the chemistry of the main cast that makes "Joy Ride" so entertaining. While Park plays a mostly serious woman, which makes her even more interesting when her wild side comes out, it's the over-the-top nature of Cola and Hisu's characters that is the funniest from start to finish. From genital tattoos to genital art, nothing counts as a cover-up and everything is a laugh.

However, there is one strange feature to "Joy Ride" that stood out during my rewatch. Although it gets a little lost in vulgarity, it is a touching and true story about identity, friendship and self-development. Kim's brief appearance in a very touching scene really shines, while the feel-good ending is a real crowd-pleaser, even if you've seen it before. These thematic elements make “Joey Ride” rewatchable, even if the jokes aren't particularly surprising in retrospect.

Joy Ride has some useful special features that took about 30 minutes to build. In addition to the cast, we hear from director Adele Lim, writers and producers Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg. For example, so many wonderful stories have been told that, at the time of writing, they could not even imagine how the film would turn out. The attached footage shows how much fun the actors had while working. Other bonus features include a brief deleted scene and a green screen capture of the cast choreographing "WAP" and singing a song from the film. All of them are interesting and worth visiting.

Joey Ride is hilarious and I appreciated Lim's directorial debut even more after watching the special and watching it a second time. It was the substance of the film that gave the comedy its staying power when it hit screens. It's great to see bold comedy come to life, and "Joy Ride" is a great example of how a heart of gold can come full circle.
