The only thing better than Paul Schrader Facebook posts are Paul Schrader movies, and the last one is two months away. Magnolia Pictures released the first trailer for the director's 24th helm of "The Master Gardener," "The First Reformation" and "American Gigolo" on Tuesday.

The crime thriller, written and directed by Schrader, stars Joel Edgerton as Narvel Roth, a brilliant gardener who works at the Gracewoods garden estate. Dedicated to his job, Roth is hounded by his employer, wealthy widow Mrs. Haverhill (Sigourney Weaver), who takes on her troubled granddaughter Maya (Quintessa Swindell) as an intern. At first, Rath gradually grows closer to the young man, and the two develop a close friendship. But Roth has many secrets and an ugly past to hide from Maya, and when the truth is revealed, the peaceful life he fights for is threatened.

The film is billed as the latest in Schrader's trilogy of films, which began with 2017's Ethan Hawke and 2021's The Card Counter starring Oscar Isaac. All three movies focus on men living alone, struggling to do what's right in a corrupt world with their dark pasts and regrets. Both "First Reformed" and "The Card Counter" received critical acclaim, and Schrader received an Academy Award nomination for his screenplay for "First Reformed."

"The Master Gardener" premiered at the Venice International Film Festival in September and also screened at the New York Film Festival. The film was without a distributor for two months after its release before being bought by Magnolia last November.

The film received positive reviews from Venice; The IndieWire review wrote, "While the central character arc may provide the dreaded 'tart,' it's the sympathy for the 'Master Gardener' that may be the biggest surprise."

"Master Gardener" Schrader is produced by curators David Gonzales, Amanda Crittenden and Scott Lastity. Luisa Law Ottocento, Jamieson McClurg and Dale Roberts of Flickster, and Linda Uzuk of Kozo Studios are executive producing the film.

"Master Gardner" hits theaters May 19. Watch the full trailer below.
