‘The Devil Conspiracy Review: SciFi Horror Action Meets QuasiReligious Superheroics
Those waiting for the combination of The Da Vinci Code and Rosemary's Baby can have their prayers answered with The Devil's Trick. Everyone may be surprised and amused by this supernatural turbulence, including Christian audiences who suspect that the English-language Czech production has been targeted in part because it was widely shown on more than 1,000 screens in the US.
If they play a beautiful CGI-filled game that treats Bible prophecy with the same reverence as the National Treasure franchise in American history, they will be rewarded with sweet, albeit stuffy, popcorn. However, producer/writer Ed Allen's first fantasy, which sees Archangel Michael confront Satan's current minions on Earth, is also action-adventure, horror, camp, techno-suspense, bad taste, and a controversial Holy Grail. Canadian rider Nathan Francoski manages to pull everything together in colorful style with a lot of help from his stellar design staff. But like a complex plot structure in all directions, this "plot" is for the birds.
More from variety
You realize you're dealing with literal theology when a brief introduction reveals that Lucifer (Joe Anderson) has been cast out of heaven by an astronomical event: a meteor hurtling through space to pierce the warm heart of planet Earth, where an evil angel first regains consciousness. The word after get is "hell". He is chained to this hell forever by Michael (Peter Mensah for short) and vows to get his revenge one day.
That day seems inevitable, thanks in part to a rare public display of the Italian cathedral in Turin that allowed it to be stolen. American art student Laura (Alice Orr Ewing) and her lover, a young British priest, Father Marconi (Joe Doyle) witness a crime. He did not survive the battle with the evil fugitive known as Liz (Evelyn Hall), but with his last breath called on the archangel to "use my body to defeat the monster" and thereby recover.
Laura may have been less fortunate and ended up in prison with other women as potential receptacles for sacred or profane eggs. (There is no resolution in the film.) This is a biotechnologist, dr. There is an injection of "DNA of Jesus of Nazareth" extracted from the Shroud, mentioned by Laurent (Brian Caspi). There is also a kind of eel, ash and fire. "Earth Beast" (Spencer Wilding) looks like the offspring of a teenage mutant Ninja Turtle and has a strange body; The item of the dungeon, carrying the load, descends from the corridor of the "Hell Pit" to the Devil's abode; and more
Meanwhile, Marconi Kam Michael tries to save Laura and stop Satan's evil plan, although he is so mad at God that he says that Satan is actually calling him "Damn Father". His only allies are the Cardinal (James Faulkner) and, in the end, some "stolen souls" who "do not belong" to Hell but are stuck there anyway.
As if dealing with all that wasn't hard enough, Alan's script even maintains such a deep understanding of individual characters: their superpowers come and go, as does their loyalty to each other. "Devil's Cunning" often dilutes with its brilliant logic, because the plot is not complicated, but is served without the development of many funny ideas. Ideally, this should create a hot mess that gets more and more obnoxious as it gets too hot. Instead, the movie loses its appeal when you realize that the countless frayed threads don't come together - they end up in a messy heap.
Because quality dialogue isn't a strong point here, there's almost nothing the actors can do, some trying to keep a straight face under layers of heavy animal latex. Less fortunate was Orr-Ewing, who was eventually called to get out of a "residential" situation from which none of the actors could safely get out, as stated in the script. And the ex-dancer/model takes on her bold role as Cruella's diabolical alter ego by simply refusing to be a fool - she'll do it herself, Avik Panik , thank you very much.
This is not the only element that occasionally hints at the talk of speed, which uses the music of Ann Katherine Dern and some of the songs accompanying the original music. Visually, The Devil's story is often relevant, from the use of fantastical historical locations to the combination of gothic and sci-fi motifs by creator Onrzej Lipenski. The work on the various coins is mostly of a high standard, although the ideas they describe are rarely original; Especially good are the fallen angels "demon-bats", which appear in an eerily colorful scale of hell. DP Milan Chadima's widescreen photography is impressive in every way.
In fact, this film is like a million dollars, or rather, every cent of the millions has already been spent. But, as is often the case now, the Committee spends this artistry on less pressing circumstances. The end result is both strange and impersonal, hilarious and unforgettable.
