Spielberg, ‘Top Gun Feted By National Board Of Review
Top Gun: Maverick won Picture of the Year at the National Board of Review Awards. Inishery's Martin McDonagh's Banshee won several awards. But the evening was a tribute to writer-director Steven Spielberg and the 76-year-old director.
The tribute to Spielberg was so emotional that Colin Farrell, who won best actor for his performance in Banshee, said seeing E.T. for the first time was the most emotional experience of his life, and even surpassed it. The birth of two sons.
"I'm glad it wasn't televised," Farrell said.
Although there are no broadcasts from Cipriani's 42nd Street in downtown Manhattan, the National Board of Review Awards have long been a regular and star-studded event during Hollywood awards season. Hosted by Willie Guest for the seventh time on Sunday, this year's ceremony took place during several big days on the Oscars calendar. Voting for the Golden Globes begins on Tuesday, the Screen Actors Guild nominations on Wednesday and the Academy Awards on Thursday.
That said, the NBR Awards, presented by a group of longtime film fans, was an opportunity to create a conversation about Booth and Poland's acceptance. The National Review Board makes it easy by announcing winners in advance and matching each with generous contributions from a colleague or friend. Spielberg, who won best director for Fables, was introduced by West Side Story star Ariana DeBose.
Debussy remembers being in a nail home when she called "Steven (err) Spielberg."
"Besides trying to realize that the blood was pouring down my head and legs at the time, what I remember most was, wow, what a kind, respectful, generous invitation," Debose said of the adventure.
Gabrielle LaBelle, who played a fictional version of a young Spielberg in Fables and was rewarded with a stunning performance opposite Daniel Deadweller in Till, similarly describes the life-changing nature of Spielberg's wealth.
"I feel like I owe my firstborn or something," LaBelle said. "I don't know how to answer you."
The audience gave Spielberg a standing ovation as he took the stage.
"In all the movies I've done, my job has been to direct and direct whatever or whoever, as I see it, needs my attention," he said. “But when it came time to sit down with Tony Kushner to explore the possibilities of his legendary story, for the first time he could be hiding from a mother ship, a T-Rex or… a giant ship; A mechanical shark that never works.
Much has been said about Fables being Spielberg's most personal film, which is indisputable. Spielberg, who says that any film genre can be personal for a director, said that making his latest film was "like going back to my parents and my sisters."
"You mean you can't go home?" No, that's wrong. You can go home,” he said.
Despite Spielberg's reputation as a blockbuster, "Fablemans" struggled at the global box office with just $15.1 million, depriving it of Oscar momentum.
Meanwhile, expectations have been raised thanks to two box office hits titled Top Gun. Maverick" and "Everything Everywhere in One". Top Gun star Tom Cruise was absent on Sunday, but producer Jerry Bruckheimer celebrated by accepting the best picture award.
"Simply put, it's a force of nature," Bruckheimer said. "A man with one purpose: to entertain the masses."
Anywhere Once star Michelle Yeoh took home the Best Actress nomination after her Crazy Rich Asians co-star Awkwafina gave it to her. Born in Malaysia, Yeo became the first Asian to win the award in five decades, prompting him to reflect on his journey from Hong Kong to Hollywood.
"One day Hollywood called. It was really a dream come true. Until I got there, we all wanted to go to Hollywood," said Yoo. "Suddenly I was in the minority. I mean, how did that happen? I have more than you. They wear, I've never seen my face on screen. Korea." , I met people who didn't know where China and Japan were.
Janelle Monae was named Best Supporting Actress for "Glass Onion." Part 2 of the movie A Knives Out Mystery. Presented by Benoit Blanc, Daniel Craig. " you understand ?" Mona screamed. "(expletive) You have James Bond.
"When Kanel flies, when he's gliding through space, the chemicals in the air change," Craig said of his Glass Onion counterpart.
Although Farrell read the letter, Brendan Gleeson, who co-starred with Farrell in Bansher of Enshrine, did not want to accept the award for Best Supporting Actor. Gleeson commented on the success of the Martin McDonagh film "Good Days for a Sad Movie".
McDonagh is also recognized for "Best Original Screenplay". Oscar Isaac, who starred in the playwright's next film, introduced himself by recalling his first meeting with McDonough in a London pub. On stage, McDonagh praised Isaacs for "revealing that he only has a preference for the drugs he likes."
McDonagh then made one of the most interesting revelations of the evening, thanking the film's distributor, Searchlight Pictures, for not giving feedback on the script.
