‘The Novelists Film Trailer: Hong Sangsoos 27th Movie Holds A Mirror To His Process
Hong Sang Su's level of play may not have been seen on screen after Rainer Werner Fassbinder's run. Novel Movie, a drama based on his latest film, is the South Korean director's 27th film. This is also his second album this year along with "Walk Up". (Not the most impressive this year, he released three films in 2017.) Watch the trailer for The Writer below, exclusive to IndieWire. Film Guild opened at Lincoln Center on October 28th and runs in select theaters starting November 4th.
In the official synopsis, Junhee (Lee Hyun, last seen in Hong's In Your Face in 2017) is a writer who becomes frustrated with her writing. While visiting an old friend, he met a director who was ready to film one of his novels before the project fell through. One meeting leads to another, and soon he's dining with Kells (Kim Min-hee, star of Park Chan-wook's The Maid), a famous actress who has doubts about her role as an artist.
After that, Junhee got a mother. he will star in a new movie with Kilsu. It will not be like other films. It will be a feature film. In his 27th film, Hong holds up a mirror to his creative process and asks what exactly we are looking for in a work of art. As his characters discuss their lives, their businesses, and their interconnectedness, Hong makes a statement of sorts before (or maybe not at all) turning his unique creations into the final cartoon.
According to Variety's review, "All of Hong's films are somewhat tangram films, showing slightly different variations on the same basic parts." The feature film is no exception, reproducing many of the narrative, thematic and stylistic elements of its predecessors, but at least adding a trick or two to the wrinkled, worn bag of a director, an artist who still feels alive and on his own.
