HK Movie Table For Six A Big Hit With Audiences In China, They Call It A “TrueBlue Cantonese Comedy”
Now it's a blockbuster that no one expected.
Hong Kong comedy Table for Six, directed by Sunny Chan (not to be confused with the Hong Kong actor of the same name), starring Dao Wong, Steffi Tang, Louis Cheng, Peter Chan and Ivana Wong is slowly gaining steam. It has topped the Hong Kong box office charts since its release on September 7 and is now set to become the highest-grossing film of the year in Hong Kong.
The Cantonese film was originally supposed to be released this February as a Chinese New Year film, but the release date was pushed back to September due to Covid.
Table for Six revolves around three brothers, played by Dio, Louis and Peter, and their efforts to organize a reunion dinner.
Dinner is not easy.Although its release was not widely released in China, the film was released in theaters with the original Cantonese audio, so the film was well received by Chinese audiences.
It earned nearly 100 million yuan ($19.8 million) in China alone in one month.
In Hong Kong, the film is now the second highest-grossing film of the year in Hong Kong, surpassing the much-hyped Anita Mui biopic Anita.
It also became the highest-grossing comedy film in Hong Kong in the past 17 years.
Of course hit.Its total box office earnings are estimated at $19.75 million ($28.1 million).
Networks gave it mostly positive reviews, with one writing that the film was a "genuine Cantonese comedy".
“Thankfully, Hong Kong films are still shown in mainland cinemas, so we know not to rely on jokes and make exciting scenes.
