New TV Shows And Movies To Stream This Weekend On Netflix, Hulu, Paramount+, Apple TV And More
The first weekend of November kicks off with a slew of new shows and movies on all the countless streaming services we'll now have to subscribe to if we want to have any hope of keeping up.
From Westerns to indie sci-fi films, there's plenty to watch this weekend, not to mention current shows like Fear the Walking Dead, Upload, The Gilded Age and more.
Now let's dive in!
All the Light We Cannot See (Netflix)
Based on the Pulitzer Prize-winning novel, All the Light We Cannot See tells the story of two teenagers at the end of World War II. The first is a blind girl who sends radio transmissions for the resistance. The second is a German boy with a special ability to detect radio signals, who is forced by the Gestapo to help track her down. It received some negative reviews from critics, but mostly positive reviews from audiences. I love WWII dramas, so I'll definitely give this four-part miniseries at least a chance.
Onimusha (Netflix)
Based on the classic video game series, Onimusha is the first of two anime on today's list. It looks dark and violent and feels like an impressive adaptation of Capcom games that haven't seen the light of day for almost two decades.
New York (Netflix)
Annette Bening and Jodie Foster star in this sports biopic about Diana Nyad, who, at 64, swam more than 100 miles from Havana, Cuba, to Key West, Florida, in 2013 without a shark cage. It's pretty wild! I can't imagine swimming that far, let alone becoming potential shark food!
Smart (Netflix)
I've always been fascinated by the story of Sylvester Stallone and his stubborn refusal to sell Rocky without getting the lead role. He was essentially a beggar, but refused to sell himself unless he could play the leading role. It was probably the smartest decision of his life. Sly tells the rest of the story in a documentary directed by Tom Zimny.
Blue Eyed Samurai (Netflix)
The second anime on this list, Blue Eye Samurai, is the story of Mizu (Maya Erskine) on her quest to take revenge on her enemies. Co-creator Amber Noizumi calls it Kill Bill and Yentl. “Perhaps the most popular film on our list today, Rotten Tomatoes received a 100% rating from critics and audiences.
Showbiz Lady (Hulu)
If you're looking for something lighter, consider Quiz Lady, a street comedy starring Awkwafina and Sandra Oh. Awkwafina's character, Anne Hume, is obsessed with quizzes and uses this obsession to help her mother, who is addicted to the game. The supporting cast includes Will Ferrell, Jason Schwartzman, Tony Hale and Paul Reubens (aka Pee-wee Herman) in his final role. The actor died earlier this year after a battle with cancer.
"Invincible" Season 2 (Amazon Prime Video)
Our third animated series on this list and one of the most anticipated, season two of Invincible returns to Amazon Prime Video this weekend. Along with The Boys and Generation V, it puts Amazon at the forefront of violent and bold superhero parodies. The cast includes Steve Yeun, J.K. Simmons and many other talented actors.
Nails (Apple TV)
Jeremy Allen White's new Apple TV film , coming after the second season of Bear , is a near-future sci-fi romance about a "nail test" that can determine whether two people are right for each other. As you can imagine, this test is prone to error, and the results are similar to those in love and romantic relationships.
Lawmen: Bass Reeves (Paramount+)
Finally, Taylor Sheridan's big new project airs this Sunday on Paramount+. Lawmen: Bass Reeves plays British actor David Oyelowo's top lawman (who we recently saw in The Bunker ). This is a true story, and Oyelowo appears to have played a major role in its creation. The supporting cast includes Dennis Quaid and Donald Sutherland. To me, as someone who loves Westerns in general, and, with some quibbles, most of Sheridan's work, this sounds great ( Yellowstone is perhaps my least favorite of his various Western dramas, or at least the most unpleasant; I chose 1883 and Haven). I haven't seen 1923 yet).
Priscilla (in the movies)
Not long ago , Elvis appeared in cinemas. Now we know the story of Priscilla Presley from director Sofia Coppola and A24. Jacob Elordi and Cailee Spaeny play Elvis and Priscilla in their marriage and often tumultuous relationship.
Other than that, I'll be watching another (probably terrible) episode of Fear the Walking Dead and the last two episodes of Upload that I discovered. I have some thoughts about the third season of this show that I will share soon. Loki and Gen V also complete the job.
