Heart Of Stone Review: Gal Gadots Bland Action Thriller
Gal Gadot plays Rachel Stone, who must protect something known as the heart in Netflix's latest summer action film. The aptly titled Heart of Stone marks another action hero role for the Israeli actress, who rose to fame with her roles in the TV series Fast and the Furious and Wonder Woman in the DC Extended Universe. An actress of Gadot's caliber, who works closely with the executive director of Mission: Impossible: Death Counter, seemed like a marriage made in heaven at first glance. However, as this spy thriller progresses, it becomes clear just how hollow and empty this film is.
Heart of Stone begins with a great opening act. It's always a good way to start a spy movie, introducing the team members, espionage, and technology at the forefront of the story. We are quickly introduced to the world with a classic James Bond opening reminiscent of Her Majesty's Secret Service. When it comes to spy thrillers, they are always compared to two cinematic giants of the franchise: James Bond and Mission Impossible. Comparisons are possible for both, but unfortunately with Heart of Stone it's an uphill battle.
Here you can see some of the things the filmmakers were trying to create. Stone is a crime action hero with a certain John McClane brutality. The intros do a great job of constantly building momentum as locations change and new obstacles appear. However, the direction of this team is non-standard. The film is directed by Tom Harper, who directed several 'Sharp Visors' and most recently 'Aeronauts'. This is Harper's first foray into big action territory, and it's understandable why this film didn't quite reach its full potential.
Heart of Stone has a lot of action scenes, but most of them are not in the field. The close-up fight scenes were shot and edited in such a way that it was difficult to tell what was going on. The camera position is awkward and often too close to the actors to see the choreography. The other problem here is that with Harper's shooting choices, it's clear Gadot isn't getting most of the action. When riding a motorcycle, the camera is fixed to the motorcycle, while the camera pans in front of a green screen or is so wide that we cannot see the shocked face.
In a year with the likes of John Wick Chapter 4, Escape 2, and Mission Impossible: Fallout Part I, this may not have been the kind of movie with actors ready to try their hand. If you have seen these movies, it is always easy to see how the actors drive, jump and fight. However, watching Rachel Stone put on a helmet that covers her head whenever she does something dangerous doesn't give you the same thrill as watching Ethan Hunt, John Wick, Tyler Rake do their thing.
Don't get me wrong, I won't mention the fantastic performance of Gadot in this film. But with the release of movies in recent months, the standard of action movies is high and the market has no need for middle class actors. Heart of Stone can certainly be praised for being one of the few female-led action films, and it has the perfect idea of not preaching feminism to the point of distraction. History. Rachel's strength as an action hero speaks for itself, and she's well acted.
However, it seems they forgot to identify Rachel. He has almost no characters in this film. Bond looks like a James Bond movie with no known backstory, but his gadgets and charm are so alluring that they're fun to watch. There are no gadgets or emotional issues to drive this film forward. In Stoneheart lurks a particle of vengeance that drives heroes and villains alike. It's a bit charming, but Gadot's protagonist lacks character to make up for the film's humor and charm.
The story is another movie about a group of people trying to get something powerful before it falls into the wrong hands. You can compare it to Mission: Impossible - Ghost Story Episode 1 where the heroes and villains are chasing the same powerful thing. But it works in this movie, as the opening scene shows what this thing is capable of. The MacGuffin in Heart of Stone is so metaphorical and mysterious that all we know is that anyone who owns it can be invincible. The goals and stakes at the heart of this film are so thinly delineated that even with the dynamic movement throughout the world, the stakes seem lower than ever as the villain seeks personal revenge first and foremost.
Speaking of villains, Heart of Stone seems to be introducing a new one every 20 minutes. After the film finally settled on its lead actors, it quickly lost one. The two remaining villains have no chemistry or an interesting buddy relationship. The plot feels tense at times, lacking the grit of other action classics and the powerful creative voice Christopher McQuarrie, Chad Stahelski, Sam Hargrave and David Leitch have brought to the genre in recent years. . Despite the unexpected twist from the start, Heart of Stone finally has a tragic final battle that leaves you stone-faced.
