'Aayirathonnu Nunakal' Review: Slowburning Mystery Drama On Unmasking Lies And Testing Bonds

Directed by Tamar KV, Aayirathonnu Nunakal released as a slow motion thriller. Echoing the narrative style of The 12th Man starring Joseph Mohanlal, the film depicts the life of a tight-knit group of friends living in the Bay Area.

In "The Twelfth" the plot revolves around a murder, while in "Airatunu Nunakal" it is about the growing conflict between friends caused by a false shadow from the past.

A fire in their apartment forces Rajesh, Sumya, Mujib and Salma to stay at Vinay and Divya's house. Their circle expands to include new friends and a lawyer. The script is accurate and expertly crafted by director Tamar, who keeps the narration true to the original.

Is it really necessary to expose past lies between couples? The film explores the complex dynamics and social implications of what is seen. Since most of the characters are newbies, the audience doesn't agree with anyone.

The film deconstructs various couples and their selfish conflicts, shedding light on their work. Knowing this, the film sometimes avoids a bit of mystery. Instead, he spends time slowly solving the underlying problem. In parallel, there is a plot involving a housewife and her husband. Departing from the traditional approach, the film eschews the murder mystery in favor of a plot born from the inconvenient truths of the past.

As for the show, all the actors like Remya Suresh, Vishnu Agastya and Shamla Hamza did a great job. Unlike The 12th Man, the cast of Aayiratonnu Nunakal reflects authenticity and steers clear of melodrama. The film's actors are adept at conveying subtle and intense emotions, and the story surprisingly avoids being overly cautious with fake effects.

Both parts of the film keep a breathtaking pace, providing an immersive experience without noticeable delay. But the plot is a bit ambiguous in terms of aesthetics. Tamar's Airathonnu Noonakal effort is certainly commendable, although a little more attention and painting on the edges could have heightened its impact. However, it is a good choice for OTT viewing pleasure.
