The meeting of two married sisters is tragically interrupted by an earthquake. But this is only the beginning of their terrible nightmare...

Despite the cruelty and immortality of the dead themselves, the Evil Dead franchise is another iconic horror franchise that remains relevant in today's pop culture context. With several sequels, a remake and a TV show that expands on the mythology established forty years ago in Sam Raimi's beloved cult classic, it's safe to say that neither the Kandarian Devil nor his flesh-and-blood followers will be leaving anytime soon. But how does this latest tasty addition compare to others? Let's dig in and find out.

Beth (Lily Sullivan) is an unlucky guitar technician whose fortunes take a turn when she discovers she is pregnant. Beth decides to visit her sister Ellie (Alice Sutherland), a tattoo artist and single mother of three who lives on a death row in Los Angeles. The area is suddenly hit by an unexpected earthquake that rips off an underground parking lot, revealing a hidden room.

Danny (Morgan Davis), the most curious of Ellie's descendants, decides to investigate, finding religious artifacts, a few vinyl records, and an interesting leather book. Believing these items may have ancient value, Danny takes them with him. Arriving in his room, he listens to a recording and reads a mysterious book amidst protests from his sister (Gabrielle Nichols), but it's too late as their worst nightmare is unleashed. When Ellie is possessed and hell breaks loose, Beth and the others must do everything they can to survive the night.

In many ways , Evil Goddess Rise serves as a great companion to 2013's Evil Dead . The action scenes are always violent and gory, the character dynamics in both stories are similar in many ways, and a constant sense of dread pervades both. From start to finish. Evil Dead Rise breaks away from the bloody business of Fede Alvarez with fast pace and high tension.

Irish director Lee Cronin, who helmed the blockbuster A Hole in the Ground , directs, yet confidently, to craft an unforgettable fantasy addition to the Evil Dead series. The nightmarish sequences of physical horror and horrific violence would make Cronenberg and Raimi smile, respectively. The intros before each act are smothered in suspense and tension, moments that really get your heart pumping.

Cronin's screenplay also deserves a mention, with the talented writer/director crafting a fast-paced, incredibly creative horror movie that's well worth your time. Cronin also manages to balance out the heavy horror aspects by adding a bit of dark Raimi-esque humor in between, which the 2013 remake is sorely lacking.

Like Alvarez, Kron's conscious effort to make us care about the characters in his film is commendable. And in this effort, the two main characters played by Australian actresses Alice Sutherland and Lily Sullivan provide excellent support. Sutherland is simply terrifying as a dead mother, who slithers and wriggles like a miserable worm, spitting out fiery curses with every breath. Watching her transform from a single mother into a grotesque demon in the flesh is truly amazing. Thanks to the special effects team for their input.

However, at the heart of this hellish drama is Lily Sullivan's relationship with Beth and her niece, Cassie, played by Neil Fisher. The two share great chemistry and share tender moments that contrast with the ominous horror. It's a heartfelt bond tested in the worst way imaginable, and the two of you end up cheering each other through this unfortunate ordeal. It is a very attractive hero game indeed.

If you ever thought changing your location from a cabin in the woods to a farm in the city was a mistake, think again. Like Scream VI released earlier this year, Evil Dead Rise uses the new setting - from a rickety staircase to the brightly lit hallways of an apartment complex - to maximum effect.

Cinematographer Dave Garbett, previously of Ash Vs. The Evil Dead, he brings his expertise to the TV show to revive Cronin's distorted vision. Garbett deftly mimics the original's action camera with Raimi gliding erratically and terrifyingly like a disembodied entity stalking its prey. Other times, the camera remains completely still, adding to the carnage and claustrophobic atmosphere in the surroundings. Composer Stephen McKeown, who previously collaborated with Cronin on The Hole in the Ground, brings an incredibly jarring sound to his score, though the vibe of Roque Baños 2013 Evil Dead musical works well in context. the film

Evil Dead Rise is a fantastic mountain festival that does the unthinkable: honor Sam Raimi's legacy while trying to do his own thing, which is pretty impressive in its own right.
