Korea Box Office: ‘Fast X Reaches $11 Million In Second Weekend
South Korea's box office performance was strong over the weekend, with Fast X securing a second round at the top of the chart, and an increasingly underdog group.
"Fast X" grossed $3.12 million in Korea from Friday to Sunday, according to Kofic, the tracking service of the Korea Film Council (Kofic). That's a 38% drop from its opening weekend, but the film's 12-day total quickly climbed to $11.4 million.
Three other titles vied for the spot ahead of Buddha's birthday on Monday and brought in multi-million dollar shows.
"Roundup. No Way Out finished second with $2.44 million in previews before its May 31 release. The film is the third installment in Ma Dong's crime-comedy action film, which debuted in 2017 with The Outlaws and was revived this summer after last year's box office hit, The Roundup with a successful sequel.
If "Fast X" won 26% of the market from 1530 screens, then "The Roundup. No Way Out" won 20.3% of the market from only 502 screens.
Guardians of the Galaxy 3 moved from second place to third place with $2.38 million over the weekend. The film has seen the fastest growth this year with three million admissions and has now been seen by 3.78 million people nationwide. In terms of money, the film has earned a total of $30.1 million for 2023, placing it in third place.
The best performer of the weekend was The Little Mermaid, which opened in fourth place despite reports of "horror ratings" or deliberately negative reviews. Disney's live-action adaptation earned $2.14 million over the weekend and $2.74 million after opening on Wednesday.
These four companies accounted for 83 percent of the market and, for the fifth consecutive weekend, had domestic revenues of more than $10 million. The Friday-Sunday total was $12.1 million.
5 significant anime films ranked after the top four. Super Mario Bros Movie was fifth with $540,000. When it opened on April 26, the film earned $16.9 million at the box office.
The sixth place was taken by the Japanese Crayon Shin-chan. Mononoke Ninja Chimpuden” with $321,000, bringing it to $4.92 million since its May 4 release.
Chill Adventure, a Korean cartoon about Dooli, a baby dinosaur looking for his mother, which was released in 1996, earned $275,000 in one weekend and $341,000 in five days.
The Japanese series The Last 10 Years collected $260,000 in the eighth place in three days and $361,000 in the first five days.
Suzume added $195,000 to finish in ninth place. As of March 8, it grossed $42.4 million, which remains the biggest opening of any film in Korea this year.
Triangle of Sorrow earned $48,000 in its second weekend, finishing in tenth place. After 12 days in Korean theaters, the 2022 Cannes winner has collected $281,000.
