‘Trim Season Is Stylish And Effective Cannabis Horror Laced With Dread [Overlook Film Festival 2023 Review]

Horror and weed are as good as chocolate and peanut butter. The emotional high that comes with a healthy high, under the right circumstances, pairs perfectly with the fear that permeates our nervous system when we enjoy a spectacular horror movie. Trim Season , director Ariel Vida's latest film, is a cannabis-themed supernatural journey worth exploring.

In the film, two friends run away from the city for a few weeks to a hemp farm to earn much needed money. The actress Emma ( sick Bethlehem Millions) has lost her job and apartment and is quickly running out of options. Supporting her best friend, Julia (Alex Eason of Star Eyes fame), accompanies her on the journey. Rising leading edge . Becks will join a promising cast including Taylor-Klaus who will star in The Dust .

These three gems of the genre provide the gravity needed when the horror begins to overwhelm the fan. Although some elements of this original and very stylish indie ride seem a little green, the performances of Esso, Million and Taylor-Klaus make this season worth it . Another character worth mentioning is Ali Ioannides, a dark horse whose bad decisions serve as accomplices to some truly heinous crimes. If it was the Evil Dead , he would have read the Necronomicon.

And based on the aforementioned Sam Raimi vehicle, this gritty journey turns into a super-stylized camp mess. The first quarter of the film might trick you into believing it's a nondescript set, but it actually has a healthy dose of mad-crazy goth when it's needed most. Mona (Jane Balder, of TV series V fame) is a quirky, reserved antagonist who lures you into submission before setting her joints on fire. I love watching him when he's on screen and I want to be more involved with his character than I am now.

While the merits of this strange folk horror story outweigh its value, there are some unfinished aspects to its strange flavor that leave a sour taste in your mouth. When magic happens and our characters don't have much autonomy, there's body choice that I think can be left at the door. There is an unusual horror here that pits the characters against each other as they pit themselves against each other and their enemies.

Although some of the decisions made in the film are not perfect, overall Vida paints a beautiful and compelling picture of a young man in danger. Cultivating marijuana plants showcases the raw Wicker Man influence, woodland atmosphere and gothic tone - a sight to behold for bloodshot eyes. His direction is poetic and confident and shows his talent to do big things.

All things considered , Trim Season is an original folk horror with a talented ensemble and a talented director at the helm. While some of the stories take the viewer down more fun paths than I'd like, the creepy, merciless style makes this a horror rental of cannabis.
