That First ‘M3GAN Trailer Had Fans Howling. Now The Movie Is Scaring Up Rave Reviews
Blumhouse's latest horror film "M3GAN" has hit theaters, but the film about a deadly AI toy has already made a killer first impression.
Several months after the official trailer was released for the popular character and stunt, "M3GAN" is back in the spotlight with the love of fans and critics alike.
"Only from #M3GAN! No offense, just call it child's play she wants (2019)," horror fan @malaymango tweeted at the film's premiere on Wednesday.
Another fan wrote, "This 'toy' is 100% better than Chucky."
As a "children's game", "M3GAN" follows a realistic toy designed to be children's best friend. But apart from plainclothes Chucky, M3GAN – short for “Model 3 Generative Android” – relies on AI to play with and protect the orphaned Caddy (Violet McGraw) and her niece Gemma (Allison Williams), a robotic expert.
Of course, when M3GAN took over, a surprising problem arose.
In One of the first releases in 2023, "M3GAN" received positive reviews from several critics, including Kate Walsh, who described the film in Time as "oddly beautiful".
IndieWire praised M3GAN as "subtle camp and social satire with genuine gore," while reviewer Courtney Howard tweeted that the film is a "god... riot" that "makes for repeated viewing." once again.
Adding more sway to the movie robot's hips is the overall effect of Rotten Tomatoes. With 127 reviews as of Friday midday, "M3GAN" has a 94% rating from critics, and deservedly so, according to some fans.
@modytalkmovies said: "Delighted to be the most admired #M3GAN hit of the year."
Even Jason Blum—the Blumhouse CEO who dressed M3GAN for Halloween and the film's December premiere—scored a Rotten Tomatoes award.
"When ratings are good, Rotten Tomatoes scores matter," he wrote on Twitter on Wednesday. "It doesn't matter if the reviews are bad. :)"
Directed by Gerard Johnston and written by Aquila Cooper, "M3GAN" seems to be filled with a clever online marketing campaign and buzz of the Chargers-Rams' final game at Sophie Stadium.
M3GAN has been in the spotlight on social media for quite some time now, but fans say its impact – or “death spike” – is only just beginning.
"If M3GAN isn't the new horror icon, something is wrong with the community," said one fan.
