M3GAN Reviews: Why Critics Are Falling For The AI Horror
M3GAN , the latest sci-fi horror film to hit theaters in 2023, has exceeded box office expectations and received widespread critical acclaim.
The thriller stars Allison Williams as Gemma, a robotic genius who becomes the unlikely guardian of her eight-year-old niece. When Gemm gives her granddaughter M3GAN, the prototype of her new AI doll, the results are terrifying.
After opening in theaters this weekend (Jan. 6), the film has a critical rating of 94 percent on Rotten Tomatoes at the time of writing.
While horror films are notorious for failing to impress critics, M3GAN seems to subvert the usual pitfalls of the genre.
So what is it about movies that some of the best critics love?
"It's witty, ironic and downright mean," wrote Clarice Loughrey of The Independent in a four-star review. "Imagine Regina George, the queen of bad girls , if someone gave her a knife and wished her dead. He was an android."
Peter Bradshaw of The Guardian also praised it for being "cheerful" and "a fun Christmas film".
According to Owen Gleiberman of Variety , " M3GAN feels like a cult film, the kind of thriller with a small but devoted following and maybe a sequel or two." "You don't have to take the movie seriously to enjoy it as a cautionary tale."
In Alison Wilmore's review for Vulture , the film's viral trailer and how the life-sized robot contributed to its "unforgettable dance."
"But it's Alison Williams whose film can be seen beyond the content of a video with a few GIFs," he says, "[ M3GAN ] wants to deliver a twisted 100-minute horror comedy with a heavy emphasis on comedy ." .
According to Jason Zinoman of The New York Times , M3GAN has "a good wolf and a sense of humor", which he says "improves the slow start and the nonsensical dialogue ("You didn't code in the parental controls"). and ' a conclusion in the book".
Although Zinoman "prefers a few more guilty parties", "the sound here is still strong enough to make people smile".
" M3GAN deftly moves the needle in terms of warning, while delivering the necessary tension and terror in its modest setting and PG-13 rating for a general crowd pleaser," he wrote . Brian: Lowry:
Although the film falls into the horror genre, its success lies in its "fun balance between comedy and gore", as described by David Rooney of The Hollywood Reporter .
