Kuttey Movie Review: Arjun Kapoor Delivers A Strong Performance In Aasmaan Bhardwaj's Dark And Raw Film
The latest release of the week is here and as the afternoon rages on with a slew of releases, we have the Bollywood film Katti set to hit theaters on 13th January. Starring Arjun Kapoor, Radhika Madan and Shardul Bhardwaj, this film looked dark, gritty and promising from the trailer. But did it live up to expectations? Let's find out.
Kuti is a film about some of the main characters – Gopala played by Arjun Kapoor, Paaj (Kumud Mishra), Pam (Tabu) and Lovely (Radhika Madan) – who try to change their situation. Everyone is planning something big. However, everything is intercepted and meets a cruel end. Will each of them win or one of them? Also, will this work (it's "cheesy" as they say)?
The premise of the film sets the tone for what you will be doing. Kati is full of blood and gore, with just the right amount of dark humor, grittiness, and grit. This person wants to shock you, but eventually you'll realize how much you've used all of this, that you'll probably laugh when the character you just introduced in the movie falls and dies. The film, full of crazy situations faced by the characters, will only remind you of the lines spoken by Tabu's character, "ki ma ki a**nh logic, apna character, hi b*ka character". **Doctor'.

The script is like a maze where all the characters move their way out of their quicksand situation - they suck more into trouble because they want to get out of it. Working on such a script is not an easy task but first time director Osman Bharadwaj who is also behind the script pulls it off well. The film is divided into acts with an introduction and an epilogue. He takes his sweet time making the film, even if it feels long and drawn out in places; But the chaos begins in the second half. And when we peak, it just gets stronger. However, we wanted the first half to be easier and the second half less chaotic. It is almost always on the verge of confusion. The film as a whole needed more of a balance.
One of the most exciting parts of the film was the cast. As you would expect, the acting really is the strong point of the film. Kumud Mishra and Arjun Kapoor get most of the screen time and both of them will impress you. Arjun Kapoor deserves a special mention here. Often criticized for her facial expressions, or lack thereof, she shines in Katya. He is entertaining to watch as a tough amoral cop of Mangalwaar ka brama and he will do whatever it takes to get out of any tough situation. The best part is that you cannot call him a ruthless man as he kills in the blink of an eye. He's also the kind of loving parent who doesn't hesitate to sing his daughter's lullaby during a planned robbery.
Kumud Mishra is light as a policeman with minimal morale but little power. He has to negotiate with the authorities to get out. You can see the desperation in his eyes and he conveys it very well. Tabu, as expected, overshadows everyone! She is an accomplished actress, capable of playing any character she can think of, and the role of Pammy in Katya was no exception. Naseeruddin Shah has limited screen time which is more like a long cameo. Radhika Madan makes an appearance in the second half but looks in awe who owns each of her strokes. Konkona's appearance is also like a drawn veil, but she is the one who sets the mood. We just wish it had more screen presence. As for Konkona, Naseeruddin and even Tabu, it seems that many good actors are little involved with Kathy.
Not to mention the music and background music, which give the text sharpness and dynamism. Vishal Bharadwaj's music along with Gulzar's lyrics can only create magic and it does here too.
Bonus: See PM Modi's Cameo in the Movie!
Kati is very popular with those who like black and sarcastic humor. However, if blood isn't your cup of tea, it's best to steer clear of it.
3 out of 5 stars for Katie.
