Black Adam And Black Panther 2 Probably Wont Get Released In China

Although China is one of the largest movie markets in the world, its government has been known to ban Hollywood movies for all the wrong reasons. Because of this, Western countries have repeatedly criticized the censorship system. Studios have also been able to hide their films from Chinese theaters entirely, as required by the government. Now we can officially add Black Adam and Black Panther: Wakanda Forever to this list. According to The Hollywood Reporter, the latest Marvel and DC movies are unlikely to be released in China.

This latest news isn't entirely surprising given the country's increasingly strict censorship laws and Covid-19 policies. But it pretty much goes to show that Black Adam and Wakanda Forever won't make as much money as previous MCU and DCEU installments.

When it comes to blockbusters, especially superhero movies, China draws the lion's share of the global box office. For example, the original Black Panther grossed $105 million in China in 2018. Black Adam star Dwayne Johnson also has a huge fan following in China. THR reports that several of his films have made big overseas box office returns, including Skyscraper ($98 million) and Hobbs and Shaw ($201 million).

In the year Marvel hasn't released a new movie in China since Spider-Man: Far From Home in 2019. Shang-Chi, The Legend of the Ten Rings and The Eternal by Simu Liu and director Chloe Zhao were banned over comments interpreted as critical of the Chinese government. Similar reports say that China is willing to investigate Spider-Man due to his heavy use of the Statue of Liberty.

Even the Chinese government is taking a strong stance against homosexuality. This may be why Wakanda Forever won't be hitting theaters anytime soon, as the movie featured two openly gay men. However, the cause of Black Adam's ban appears to be Pierce Brosnan, who plays Kent Nelson/Doctor Fate. Earlier this year, Brosnan posted a photo on Instagram of his 19-year-old family hanging out with the Dalai Lama. This could anger local politicians, as China sees the spiritual leader as a "dangerous separatist." Of course, Chinese regulators don't disclose their restrictions, so that's a pretty good guess.

Black Adam & Black Panther: Wakanda Forever is in theaters.
