“Black Adam” Is Just A Movie That Exists In 2022 [Review]
Look, I'm not here to tell you how you feel about Black Adam. Sure, a real challenge to a superhero (or antihero, but that's a very vague term) movie like this, regardless of my critics - good, bad, or indifferent - would be too much of a gritty joke for me. So critics have no choice here. I know I enjoyed it and roll to the earth to praise a bad film. Or I can say he's really bad and then I'll be surrounded by DCEU people who swear I don't understand cinema."
So I'm confused as to why Black Adam makes some of the worst mistakes in the genre, but basically it's designed to appeal to a big, loud, dumb audience. And that's okay, and frankly, it's all about this movie. This is a movement that exists in 2022, a move that has a beginning, a middle and an end. It also has characters that are played by people you know and appreciate from time to time. And it would be better if this existence became a superhero movie in 2003, not twenty years after we surpassed all that Black Adam created.
Directed by Jaume Collet-Serra ("The Shallows " and " Jungle Cruise ") from a screenplay by Adam Shtykil, Rory Haynes and Sohrab Noshirwani , Black Adam tells the story of a slave turned demigod who is thrown into prison for 5,000 years. . his anger and senseless destruction. While searching for an ancient artifact said to have demonic magical powers, Black Adam is unleashed in our modern world. His awakening prompts the Justice Society to try to imprison him before he destroys everything again. But in the brewing process there is another danger that it may take all of Black Adam's power to save the world, not destroy it. He might not be a hero, but the world might need him as a protector.
If this all sounds vaguely familiar, well, that's because it is. " Black Adam " is nothing more than a series of stereotypical superhero looks that offer little surprise or fantasy. A strong man with a tragic history, a mysterious villain armed with bandages and a human figure stuck in the middle for some reason...? And great battles with evil CGI and BAM! Our hero! Predictability is good, because that is the nature of the species itself. But this film does its best to position itself as something different and something more, and is ultimately neither one nor the other. It's exactly the same as everything before. Worse, it prompts a stupid cry to try to get the hero out of the bad guy. many times. At some point, DC will no longer have anyone to fight as every character in the Everyone's Crooks gallery is now a hero. It's exhausting to watch this happen over and over again, and Black Adam is quick to remind us how stupid the whole idea is.
All the publicity was based on the idea that Black Adam wasn't a hero because he killed people. And, of course, it's true. But he only kills bad guys with guns, which isn't a problem for Captain America as long as his minions are anonymous and faceless. There's nothing that separates Black Adam from other heroes across the genre, and it's hard to reconcile the movie trailer with what's actually happening in the movie. Sure, you could argue that you haven't seen any marketing materials, so this point is perfect. But I don't think anyone can claim to be blind. Half of the introduction before each movie consists of 4 different characters from the movie telling you how they will be different. Hell, The Rock itself isn't going to shut up about how different and innovative this film is, so it's really hard to ignore the fact that it doesn't look that way either.
On the front lines , Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson is doing well (that word again) as the titular superhero, completely reinventing his charm and trying his best to be something a little different. In the end it wasn't enough, just an angry and less violent version of every character I've seen before. But I think I owe him something for feeling something in Black Adam , which is more than anyone can say, oh I don't know, Chris Pratt in Super Mario Bros. Next Movie. The protagonist here is Justice League, which appears to be based on a completely different film we haven't seen, but which we've been hoping to see. Led by Aldis Hodges as Hawkman, Pierce Brosnan as Doctor Fate, Noah Centineo as Atom Smasher. and Quintessa Swindell as Cyclone, they form the Justice Society and are basically D-List champions for justice/suicide, regardless of league or group. They seem to be secondary, mostly unnecessary for the overall plot, but actually the funniest part of the mess Everyone clearly loves being here, and a superhero comedy is a much better idea than anything Black Adam has done.
And then there's these damn boys, random sons of a random woman we have to look after, but no more than human characters in the story because we can't make superhero movies without them, and of course those kids have to be the reason why Black Adam turn into a hero. Everything this guy does makes me roll my eyes and I'd love to see an edited version where he's completely disconnected from this. Halfway through I thought, "Who did this?" Black Shani ? Of all the metaphors you can add to the film, why do you think Iron Man level 3 parenting adventures are a good idea in Black fukken Adam?
