Restore Point , 2022

Summary:

The powerful technology is set in Central Europe in the year 2041 and makes it possible to bring murdered people back to life using “reset points” that are gentle on brain waves. It allows an ambitious young detective to investigate the case of a murdered couple when the recovery team brings one of them with them.

Robert Hloz's impressive debut presents itself as a technology-driven neo-noir thriller shot through with the existential questions favored by a certain genre of science fiction writers. The Czech Republic film Restore Point deftly tackles difficult brain problems without shying away from explosive action sequences and stunts.

For me it's Philip K. It reminds you of Dick's work. Who wrote “Do Androids Dream of Electric Ships”? The source novel for Blade Runner as well as other adaptations such as Minority Report . This stylish external variation is also reminiscent of the classic futurism of the 1920s and expressionist metropolitan landscapes . Is it cyber? This is punk. Yes Does it offer a compelling picture of eternal philosophical dilemmas in a dynamic, laser-marked environment? Naturally.

Central Europe in 2041 is not a very happy place. Growing economic difficulties have led to serious inequalities in society and violent crime is commonplace. Fortunately, technology has given humanity many great new things, including the ability to periodically protect the brain to protect it from sudden death. This is a restore point that works like saving progress in a video game.

Many are against such an inferiority complex. This is a dark movement called the "River of Life" that attacks technological developments in order to restore the value of life or something like that. They use the method of "absolute murder". This is when a person cannot return because they have not saved in the last 48 hours.

David Karlstat (Matej Hadek), senior researcher at the Restoration Institute, and his wife appear to have been killed without final support, for which the movement is most likely responsible. Nobody has the last savings, so it gets more complicated.

However, there is a 6-month backup of Kurlstat initiated by the institute. The ambitious and tough detective M. Trochinoska (Andrei Mohilova) is assigned to investigate the case of the murdered couple together with this version of Kurlstat. Along the way, they must deal with the unwanted attention of a hostile Interpol agent (Václav Neuzil) as well as the severe emotional turmoil of grief, jealousy and despair.

Apparently the film is a spectacular journey into the near future. Characterized by dark splashes of color that don't necessarily adhere to the rainy black of Blade Runner , the film cleverly keeps things simple and uncluttered. Hloz is aware of how quickly things can become dull and boring. He keeps the settings accessible and leaves the main work to the ideas. As for the soundtrack, there is a very catchy synthesizer as well as the recurring motif of Debussy's melancholic Claire de Lune piano piece.

Overall, it is a well-crafted story whose characters impressively express their human insecurity in the face of ever-increasing technology. As Hloz's calling card, it is sure to attract attention, and rightly so.
