Leave The World Behind Author Explains Films Controversial Ending
Warning: Major spoilers will leave Earth
Leave the World Behind, Netflix's new extraordinary thriller directed by Mr. Sam Immel, creator of the robot , ends on a very sad note.
The 2020 film adaptation of Roman Allam's novel, starring Julia Roberts and Ethan Hawke, follows Amanda and Clay Sandford as they move their two children, Rose and Archie (Farrah McKenzie and Charlie Evans), to Long Island, New York. You have to spend the weekend.
While there, the owner of their luxury home, GJ Scott (Mahershala Ali) and his daughter Ruth (Mihala Herold) mysteriously return to the estate after a terrifying event shakes the town.
Two families are forced to stay at home together as society rapidly collapses after the technological infrastructure, from phones to televisions, begins to fail.
Although various theories have been proposed as to the cause of the disaster (Russia, Iraq, and North Korea have been suggested), the film never identifies the aggressor, or even if there was one.
Rose stays alone with her friends in the basement of a neighbor's house on Long Island. The film's mysterious conclusion was criticized by viewers who complained that it was "too abrupt".
The film's ending is adapted from Alam's novel, where Rose finishes packing her household items before returning to her family.
In a new interview with Variety, the author, who serves as the film's executive producer, called the ending of the letter "very satisfying."
"It's very satisfying and satisfying to finish a joke that [Ismail] does," he said. “It's a bit self-indulgent because he's a filmmaker. He has also worked in television and has shown something of the power and influence of that medium on this character.
“I say it's funny, but I don't think it's funny. I don't think it's a joke with Rose. I don't think it's a joke for the masses. I don't think it's a joke for friends . Remember that art is a form of liberation. The theatrical experience of watching this film is very powerful because I watched the audience reaction the last three times and no one knew what I was going to do. They say, is it funny? Is it terrible? Is it really over? And I like that too.
When asked why the audience should not be closed at the end of the film, he said: “Wasn't that very satisfying? This is a movie that respects you as a viewer. In that last scene between Julia and Mihala, they don't push. Even earlier, as they sat in that little cabin, Ruth admitted that there was some truth to what Amanda had said, that they had agreed on something, but it wasn't over yet; the hug wasn't the story.
"I have no problem with a big disaster movie that rescues six or eight main characters and brings them together after the disaster and makes you go, 'Okay, everything's going to be okay.' I don't think so. From the movie. The movie."
In a four-star review for The Independent, Clarice Loughrey wrote: "Ishmael is big and fat, with Hitchcockian references and flashy cameras...but nothing shows Ishmael's hand more than Rose's chemical dependency on her friends ." A time he never lived in,” he explained. Yes, it's funny that the series is now on Netflix, but that's exactly the kind of modern hypocrisy the world likes to get away with .
The film quickly shot to No. 1 on Netflix, but now only has a 42 percent rating on review aggregator site Rotten Tomatoes, with viewers filing similar complaints.
Meanwhile, Elon Musk is under fire for his claims that Tesla "edited" the film.
Leave the World Behind is now available to stream on Netflix.
