Mother, May I? Film Review

Mother, May I? Film Review

There must be a lot of pressure to fit your film into a certain box. Viewers make split-second decisions about what to watch, so how a movie unfolds in that moment is very important. This means communicating that films fit into boxes they don't fit into.

Mom, is it possible? It can definitely be classified as a horror film. We can perfectly understand why. When it comes to low budget cinema, horror films have had some success. You can still enjoy lo-fi horror. But the problem is, mom, what can I do? It's not that scary a movie. The disconnect between how it's marketed and what it actually is may disturb some viewers.

"Mom, can I?" If we had to choose a genre, body swap would be a psychological thriller. Yes, it doesn't roll off the tongue. Now we know why he was featured in “Sod It” and “Scary.” There's only one scene in the entire film that gives us chills, and it's a good one.

Of course, it all starts out like a horror movie. Emmett (Kyle Galler, slowly becoming the Scream King in Smiles and Screams) inherits his mother's modest country home. He's a little surprised because his mother practically disowned him when he was a child and hasn't spoken to her since. And then quickly removes nearby buildings for sale.

Anya (Holland Roden, “Mission: Tournament of Champions”) comes along for the ride. He is Emmett's partner and it soon becomes clear that he is playing the role of his therapist. He appears to be haunted by ghosts in the house where he was born. There's a funny, weird moment where Anya drags Emmett to the kitchen table New Age-style and they play their respective roles (which get creepier and creepier as the film goes on).

Emmett has abandonment issues and suppresses them very faithfully. He says he doesn't care about his mother's death, but that can't be true. But as the film progresses, it becomes clear that Anya has a role to play. She desperately wants Emmett's baby, suffers from severe hair-related imitation syndrome, and carries a large bag of weed with her.

This situation is already ripe for psychodrama. You can leave everything as it is. But there's no chance, mom, can I? The spirit of the mother was introduced. First he senses his presence in the fog of the window, then he whispers in the darkness and finally he decides to sneak into the occupied area.

We don't want to reveal too much, but it's no exaggeration to say that resources are not played for fun. This is not an exorcism or an exorcism. Instead we have something in common with comedies like The Big One or Freaky Friday. Yes, we were surprised too. Because Emmett's mother shamelessly returns and decides to pretend she never left her happy family. This means that the actors are dressed in plain clothes and speak with the voice of an old woman.

So we're like, "What?" It goes through many stages. Emmett and Anya go into "denial", which never happened. What follows is a fairly ancient wave of “acceptance,” “anger,” and “denial.” The young couple was already on the brink of the abyss and the reappearance of the mother shook this abyss.

You have to remember that we were expecting a horror movie, so this was a bit of a surprise for us. This misunderstanding was harmful: the ghost's whispers in the dark seemed like a vain attempt to scare us. He kept trying to do it, and we were like frustrated players on a broken roller coaster . When does it begin? But really, Mom, what can I do? None of this interests me.

The flexibility of the body was also an obstacle to overcome. It's hard to find comedy in a dark RPG where characters pick up cardigans and suddenly become old ladies. The tone is serious, but doesn't quite match the events of the film. Sometimes we laugh and immediately feel guilty.

There's just one obstacle. The second is after this boycott. The problem is trust. Because both characters absolutely refuse to believe that anything supernatural is happening, and this refusal is extremely depressing. We get it: ghosts aren't real, and the tone leans towards reality. But three-quarters of the film is clearly a waste of time in disbelief of what is happening. If they were right and the facts were made up, the couple should have consulted a psychologist in the first trimester. Nobody knows why.

And it's confusing because mom, can I? The direction is a step or two above the average low-budget horror film, and the same goes for the acting (Kyle Haller is particularly boring and impatient). The psychochat and coding therapy sessions are astonishing in their audacity. Is it okay if someone tries to make fun of our mother? We tell them where to get off.

Best way to have fun with your mom, right? You have to come here with the right assumptions. This is not a horror movie. It also doesn't affect the hair on the back of your head. Instead, he works his way into dysfunctional relationships and sees what happens when he's most stressed. If you can accept it as a subtle psychological stimulus, you are more likely to get something out of it. Try not to laugh when you meet like an old woman.
