Everything We Know About Saltburn So Far: Trailer, Cast, Release Date
Who doesn't love the dark and aching campus atmosphere, the (unsuccessful) attempts to overcome class differences, the beautiful views of typical British houses, and the homoerotic bonds between classmates? If this is your case, Saltburn is the film for you! The first trailer for thriller The Emerald Fennel has just been released, and it's going to be a thrill-seeker full of haunting long stares through the window. With direct comparisons to Brideshead Revisited and The Talented Mr. Ripley, in the teaser, presents beautiful visuals, including Jacob Ellardi in a tuxedo, Jacob Ellardi smoking, and Jacob Ellardi with eyebrow piercings.
The film is written, directed, and produced by Fennell, the director who created the revenge thriller The Promising Young Woman in 2020. Notably, Fennell was also showrunner for Killing Eve season 2, which bodes well for Saltburn , we think. While details about the film are still unknown - it premiered at the Telluride Film Festival on Thursday and the reviews are just starting to come in - here's everything we know about this highly anticipated thriller.
What is Saltburn all about ?
Saltburn's official synopsis describes it as "a beautiful tale of privilege and desire." The focus is on two students studying at Oxford University in the mid-2000s: Oliver Quick and Felix Catan. Oliver clearly attended an elite university; In the first few seconds of the trailer, she is chased by a classmate who compliments her costume and then says, "This is a rental, right?"
Felix seems to be on the other end of the socio-economic spectrum and invites Oliver to Saltburn , his family's luxurious estate. The film's official description described the Cattons as "eccentric"; A recent Vanity Fair interview with Fennell went even further, describing them as "a weird bunch of characters who say and do things that make you cringe." The description promises that Oliver will have an "unforgettable summer"; Judging by the lingering stares, the lingering party scenes, and the shots of Felix smoking a cigarette in the trailer, it sure looks like it.
Who plays at Saltburn ?
Barry Kegan, who starred in the films "Banshee of Inishreen" , "Batman " and "The Killing of a Sacred Deer" , plays Oliver. Jacob Elordi, who we all know and hate as Nate Jacobs on Euphoria , stars as Felix. The supporting cast includes Carey Mulligan (with whom Fennell previously worked on A Promising Young Woman ), Rosamund Pike, Richard Grant, Alison Oliver and Archie Madekwe.
To what extent will Saltburn go openly gay ?
Possible? According to independent film blog World of Reel, an unnamed Saltburn test taker said there were "lots of nudity and smut to make you want to talk".
Additionally, in an interview with Vanity Fair, Fennell elaborated on the film's exploration of the dark side of desire. "If it feels real, if it sounds like something you could really do yourself if you wanted to, then that's not so bad to me," Fennell told the magazine. "There must be an element of denial and an element of violation for this extraordinary carnal desire to arise." The article goes on to describe "spooky, sometimes erotic moments that are sure to leave an unforgettable impression on the viewer."
Judging by the visceral, erotic moments that characterize season two of “Killing Eve” (especially this final episode), we can expect Fennell to bring gay stuff to Saltburn . If you want to know more about how Oliver and Felix's relationship developed, check out some of the early reviews, but this sounds like one movie you won't want to spoil.
