China Box Office: ‘SpiderMan: Across The SpiderVerse Opens To SoSo $17.2M
Sony's acclaimed Spider-Man. Across The Spider-Verse opened to $17.2 million in China over the weekend;
As in the United States, the film was well received by Chinese critics and viewers. The film currently has a 9.4 rating on ticket apps Maoyan and Tao Piao Piao and 8.8 on fan site Douban, far better than any other Hollywood film currently releasing in the country. But Maoyan expects the film to only make about $35 million domestically, a big step up from 2019's Spider-Man: Invasion. Into the Spider's $62.8 million.

Analysts have questioned the extent of Chinese Hollywood studios' shortfall in recent times, with shoddy productions linked to shifts in market demand. But the elusive performance between the two Spiderverse films, both of which are undeniably strong, seems to indicate that Chinese audiences' appetite for American content has actually waned.
The sequel made $120.5 million in North America, up from $35.6 million for the first film in 2018.
Universal Pictures' Fast X took second place with $7.6 million. After three weekends, the film had grossed $124.1 million, the highest for a non-Chinese title that year.
Japan's Studio Ghibli took third place with its remake of the 1986 classic Castle in the Sky, which grossed $6 million Friday through Sunday and $10.7 million after its June 1 release.
Nobita's Doramon Sky Utopia was just a step behind with $4.2 million in its opening weekend and $10.9 million from its June 1 opening.
