MOVIE REVIEW: We Head Into Dark Territory With Horror 'From Black'

Starting from a horrific crime scene, From Black promises a lot but doesn't quite deliver.

Anna Camp stars as Cora , a recovering drug addict who, grappling with guilt after the disappearance of her young son, receives an outlandish offer to find out the truth about what happened and make things right.

Focusing on the guilt, grief, and devastating loss of a child, Fromm falls into the same territory as Black Pet Sematary and Wake Wood .

In only his second film, director Tomás Marquis is certainly adept at creating danger and using tight spaces to trap his protagonists in unavoidable situations.

The screenplay, co-written by Marchis and Jasab Flower, is the source material focusing on the camp and its internal and external battles.

The former "True Blood" star puts a lot of work behind her life as a woman and her physical transformation tests her body.

John Alles ( Abel ) is also great as the leader of the recovery team with his own problems, but others like Jennifer LaFleur (Cora Bray's police sister ) contribute a bit more to the development of certain elements of the story.

The movie plays best in the scenes where Camp and Ales deal with their ability to escape, and the wild feelings between the two are louder than the shouting.

However, there are moments when we see him die in terror, with bodies exhaling and voices turning into snarling monsters.

Marchese and Flower use flashbacks to relieve some of the tension as we have a clear idea of where things are going.

A mixture of pain, magic, demonic entities, and excellent performances from Camp and Alles, Out of Black comes disappointingly close to meeting the same standards as The Black Phone . With a little more attention to script and editing, this could have been an exhilaratingly devilish ride into the dark.
