'The Super Mario Bros. Movie' Jumps Past Another Huge Milestone At The Global Box Office
Mama Mia! Illumination and Nintendo continued to have box office hits with Super Mario Bros. The film as an animated feature has now exceeded $900 million at the worldwide box office. As seen over the weekend, the film has shown great staying power among audiences and continues to do well in theaters after 21 days. Once that last figure is passed, Universal's next target is the coveted $1 billion mark, which Mario and Co. should easily achieve. next week.
In total , the Super Mario Bros. movies. has grossed $444 million in the United States and $457.2 million worldwide, earning $901.2 million worldwide. The film should get a bit of a second wind to boost those numbers even more as it opens in Korea today and heads to Japan on Friday. Mario's steadfastness as a pop icon and recent word of mouth helped the film win the Universal Best of Week 3 crown. Not that he didn't need some help, flipping the original Jurassic World upside down.
As Mario grew, he wanted to break more records for Universal in general. Minions: The Rise of Gru reached $942.5 million worldwide in March, making it the company's highest-grossing all-time so far in 2019. The time between Universal Animated films, Mario should easily move up a few notches as it surpasses Despicable Me 2 ($975.3 million) and possibly Despicable Me 3 ($1.035 billion). Only $1.159 billion in 2015 lackeys held off the climb, but it's hard to quantify what the plumber has accomplished so far. It also had four of the top 10 MPA films worldwide in 2019, including No Time To Die and Jurassic World Dominion, helping Universal's recent dominance at the box office continue.
The success of Super Mario Bros. nor did it make it to the cinema. Earlier this month, Bowser's ( Jack Black ) romantic ballad "Peaches" cracked the Billboard Hot 100, proving once again just how irresistible Mario fever can be. In 1993's unsuccessful Adaptation helped this version of Plumber's Adventures succeed thanks to its faithfulness to the game and plenty of references for longtime fans to check out. There's potential for expansion from here, as the film opens up opportunities for more Nintendo adaptations, as well as sequels and spin-offs featuring characters like Donkey Kong.
Super Mario Bros. Movies starring Black with Chris Pratt , Anya Taylor-Joy , Charlie Day , Keegan-Michael Key , Seth Rogen , and others is still in theaters.
