Anna Kang: The Rising Star In Film Scoring
Born and raised in the rural village of Yulpo in Pyeongtaek, South Korea, Anna Kang began playing the piano at the age of five and fell in love with music at a young age. Anna studied New Media Composition at Sangmyung University in Seoul, where she developed fundamental compositional skills such as musical balance and broad perspective, which are essential for a composer in any field.
Anna's ability to analyze video and find dramatic motifs in it became a real starting point for her cinematography.
After graduating from Sangmyeon University, Anna received a Berklee World Tour Scholarship to study at the Berklee College of Music in Boston, Massachusetts.
Anna Kang's work as a media composer began with her first project, the short film Robot Vacuum Cleaner, Romance, which received critical acclaim in South Korea, including Mediact, Korea Video Media Council and ABC Award. He served as the sole composer and supervised all of the music that appears in the film, including the original score, which he did not write.
“I had some research and challenges on how to interpret the personality of Coco, the robot vacuum cleaner, through music. It also required an appropriate sound that would not detract from the unique warm sensibility and visual beauty of director Yoo Ah In. By researching and combining different sources, I was able to create a unique romantic yet futuristic sound for Coco. Director Yoo Ah In has a great eye for detail, so there were many processes involved in creating the final result. But as a composer, I followed the director's idea to the end and introduced different musical directions to create this wonderful work. Anna Kang's commitment to Christian music is rooted in her upbringing. He went to church from childhood and started playing in church. This blossomed into a career in composition and orchestration inspired by his faith.
One of Anna's main Christian music projects is the World Remnant Conference (WRC), which took place in 2017. The festival brought together Christians from 15 countries, and around 200 live performers were recruited to participate in the event. Anna worked with a team of eight as composer and orchestrator to stage dozens of pieces for the festival. Live performances of classical, musical and folk music were also featured during the four-day event held at the popular BEXCO venue in Busan. Even the music for the various videos shown at the festival was created and arranged by Anna's team. "It was a challenging and interesting job for me as a multimedia composer. Video clips of various purposes were shown to the audience on the big screen on the stage. A choir and an orchestra of up to 200 people performed live in front of the screen. Along with the video, the music that I wrote and accompanied was played live. It was a challenging task that took video into account and required a broad understanding of everyday music as well as a different perspective,” says Anna.
Performers at the WRC conference included award-winning musicians such as Jin-joo Kwak, a soprano who won first place at the prestigious Joongang Music Competition, and Haun Jang, a classical guitarist who performed with New York's Union City Orchestra at Carnegie Hall. and the Philharmonic Orchestra of Russia, which won first prize at the 32nd International Competition of the Korean Guitar Association.
Anna Kahn has taken on a new challenge as a media composer, collaborating with Igloo Music, a production company that works with major players in the media industry such as Netflix and Disney. His industry knowledge and experience in music software has allowed him to work on many projects with award-winning engineers, directors and publishers. These projects include the Netflix shows Madre Solo hay Dos, Cielo Grande, The Glory, the Netflix movie Tonight You're Sleeping with Me, and the Disney show Big Bet.
