The Absolute Best Horror Movies On Netflix
Perhaps not the trend you might expect, Netflix is home to an incredible treasure trove of quality horror movies.
It really has a lot. So much so that not all famous horror movies can top this list. (You'll find them in the other charts below.) A mix of Sly Originals, the great Mike Flanagan, and international sounds, all of which have a minimum rating of 70 on Metacritic. Enjoy the tension.
Two films titled Outgoing Calls in 2020. Watch this South Korean time travel thriller that revolves around phone calls. 28-year-old Seo-Yeon finds a phone buried in a closet in her childhood home. The phone rings and the caller has been living in the same house for 20 years . Last-minute twists, and a wild cat-and-mouse chase that alters the past and the present, make this film a must-see.
Like other titles on this list, this brilliant psychological horror serves as an allegory for larger social issues like oppression. Set in 1980s Tehran during a series of airstrikes known as the Urban War, the film follows the story of a mother and daughter who are haunted by a mysterious evil in their home. With echoes of The Babadook and a fresh twist, Under The Shadow is a great introduction to horror.
One of Stephen King's most successful adaptations, this horror-dramatic adaptation of the 1922 novel is a slow burn with captivating performances at its heart. Thomas Jane, who you may also recognize from 2004's Boogie Nights and The Punisher, gives one of the best performances of his career as Wilfred James, a farmer who makes the very wise decision to kill his wife with their help. The Guy sequel was terrible on so many levels (if you don't like mice, you won't like them).
Did I hack it? Creep 2 does the impossible. It's better than the original . A self-proclaimed serial killer (Mark Duplass, also co-writer) lured videographers to, and you guessed it, his remote home in the woods. With a mix of absurd laughs and terror, this low-budget psychological horror is a real gem.
This clever psychological horror comes in part from co-author Isa Mazze's experiences as a photographer (or webcam model). But Cam is not a documentary, it follows Alice Ackerman, a young camera girl who one day discovers that her show has been captured by her real-life counterpart. This special red glow with the threat of technology is a very good feature to play with.
vampires vs. Bronx (2020)
vampires vs. The Bronx is a unique horror comedy in more ways than one. Set in the Bronx, New York, it follows young Miguel Martinez, a man with a big heart, as he helps raise money for a struggling local bodega. But it's not just the new clothing stores that threaten to move. Evil chewers and pale necks devour people and their possessions. Comments on improv goofy magic, twists and turns, Vampires Vs. The Bronx is a fun twist on the genre.
Set in the remote Scottish Highlands, this fast-paced thriller is anything but an idyllic getaway. Get ready for a real nightmare where the main character can't wait to wake up. Vaughn and Marcus go on a boys' weekend fishing trip, but after a night of drinking, they find themselves caught up in events they couldn't have planned. Caliber lives up to its name by offering an impressive package of dark drama and suspense. Let all this power hit you.
An expertly crafted horror film that quietly serves as an allegory for PMS. You read that right. It Follows train focuses on a supernatural creature that lives on the outskirts of the city, constantly stalking its prey at a slow, zombie-like pace. Our hero Jay (played by modern scream queen Mika Monroe) is caught up in this raging mess, facing off against a terrifying detective. A modern classic with an original soundtrack inspired by John Carpenter.
Before Black Widow, Kate Shortland made a name for herself by making excellent independent films, including The Berlin Syndrome. This psychological horror has Teresa Palmer as Claire Havell, a young Australian woman who moves to Berlin to meet a man who keeps her locked in her apartment. A game of cat and mouse begins between the captors and the prisoners. Although sometimes slow in its tight surroundings, Berlin Syndrome is an unquestionably impressive film.
Terror hits...close to home. Uncovering his supernatural crimes through a harrowing human story, The Home follows Bol and Rial, a Sudanese refugee couple struggling to adapt to a new life in an English town. Don't expect total horror. House plays with psychic ghosts from the past, adding yet another hint of doom. A moving and powerful work.
After watching this movie, you might have a favorite female director in Julia Ducourneau. Raw follows Justin, a vegan in his first year as a vet, who suffers from peer pressure, eats raw meat and breaks out in rashes all over his body. This film deals with questions of identity in a very powerful and symbolic way and is a must watch from your indie couch on Netflix.
From Netflix's impressive list of international films comes the Spanish sci-fi horror platform. The high-level story revolves around a tower that provides food to people on each level via a platform. Those at the top get the best and most generous spreads, which get swallowed up as the platform level goes down. Social commentary resonates throughout this dystopian, suspenseful, and sometimes terrifying thriller.
If you're looking for more proof that the Duplass brothers are evil, here's an easy sell. Patrick Price (also director and co-writer) plays a videographer who answers a Craigslist ad for Joseph (Mark Duplass), who wants to make a movie for his newborn baby. In general, I like horror movies that rely on performance to disorient you because they are so difficult. And I have to give it to Mark Duplass. It's really scary.
Following the flawless continuation of The Haunting of Hill House series, Mike Flanagan brings us this masterful adaptation of Stephen King's Gerald game novel. Carla Gugino is excellent as Jessie, a wife who vacations with her husband to a secluded house on a lake in Alabama. When Jesse finds himself handcuffed to a bed with no one to help him escape, it becomes a matter of survival and escape. Another chapter in Flanagan's horror turns into a quiet triumph for his tormented character.
