The film is true to its source material—Paul Tremblay's 2018 novel The Cabin at the End of the World— to the end, in that it wouldn't be a Shyamalan film without his input at the end. A terrible disappointment in the book, not Judgment Day. But the film's twist on the story, apart from the impeccable cinematography and excellent acting, hampers the power of its adaptation. (B+) All the taciturn patriotic youth on the Western Front are shed like potato skins in German director Eduard Berger's new adaptation of Lewis Milestone's 1930 novel of the same name. A film as deftly crafted as it is wildly chaotic, it is an immersive experience, if not as heavy as other modern war films. With Felix Kammerer, Albrecht Schoch and Daniel Brühl. (a-) Avatar: A sequel to the fantastic 2009 Avatar from James Cameron's Runway (the highest-grossing film) tells the story of the Sully family and their efforts to protect one another. All of Cameron's cinematic obsessions come together in this big chunk of mind-bending spectacle with a classic action-adventure story. PG-13 (sequences of extreme violence, intense action, partial nudity and strong language). 192 minutes
(C-) Director Damien Chazelle's latest film, Babel, stars a massive cast led by Brad Pitt, Margot Robbie and Jean Smart. No doubt lots of cool kids would eagerly tune in to be enthralled by the movie's over-the-top, even if many of them were found to be boring and crude. His technical skills also seem aggressive. R (for strong and violent sexual content, images of nudity, gore, drug use and strong language). 188 minutes.
(A) BANHEES INISHERIN A man (Brendan Gleeson) suddenly ends his lifelong friendship with an Irishman (Colin Farrell), with disturbing consequences for both. Playwright Martin McDonagh and a cast of incredible actors create this haunting dream of friendship and turn it into one of the best films of the year. R (full language, violent content, and brief explicit nudity). 109 minutes
(b) Black Panther: Wakanda Forever Following the death of star Chadwick Boseman in 2020, director and co-writer Ryan Coogler and co-writer Joe Robert Cole returned to the drawing board for this sequel, penning the script about his sister Shu (Letitia Wright) as she confronts grief and loss, who rose to power. Wright has stepped up and shown his seriousness as an actor, shouldering the emotional weight of this film, which was as much a bittersweet farewell for Boseman as it was for T'Challa's character. PG-13 (for action, extreme violence sequences and some language). 161 minutes
(b) Jonathan Majors and Glen Powell 's dedication as Korean War pilots Jesse Brown and Tom Hudner, whose friendship mirrors the US Army's integration efforts when Brown becomes the first black pilot to complete basic Army training. This is a satisfying social justice drama. PG-13 (strong language, some war/violence and smoking). 138 minutes
(b) 80's for Brady In this sweet comedy based on true events, four friends (Sally Field, Jane Fonda, Rita Moreno and Lily Tomlin) travel to the 2017 Super Bowl to watch Patriots quarterback hero Tom Brady. The jokes are very clean, for the most part leaving the film as a children's film. Funny enough to remind you that these heroes are still in the game for fun. PG-13 (brief strong language, some suggestive references and some medicinal content). 98 minutes
(a-) Elvis In this sprawling pop epic, director Baz Luhrmann takes on the legacy of Elvis Presley, reminding us how dangerous, charismatic, and rebellious the King of Rock and Roll really was. The centerpiece of the film is a completely transformed star Presley played by Austin Butler. PG-13 (drug use, strong language, suggestive material and smoking). 159 minutes
(a-) It's All the Same In this wild adventure fantasy comedy, a Chinese immigrant (Michelle Yeoh) struggles with an IRS tax audit into a violent multiverse confrontation. With the voices of Ewan McGregor, David Bradley, Gregory Mann, Tilda Swinton, Finn Wolfhard and Christoph Waltz. With intense gore and close-up nudity, this hilariously hilarious film is barely rated RR (for graphic violence, disturbing material, strong sexual content, graphic nudity, drug use, and multiple language). 117 minutes
(b) LIVING BILL Nighy has never looked better in this bleak 50s drama about a terminally ill and depressed man who is about to end his life. This is a film full of passion, a call to war, so don't miss a second when you get it. PG-13 (for some suggestive and smoky ingredients). 102 minutes
(b) M3GAN You can run, but you definitely can't hide, so say goodbye to your newfound horror movie obsession in this hilariously hilarious thriller about a real-life doll who takes on a life of her own. M3GAN is, for the most part, a comedy before a horror movie, starting with the laughs before the violence and shocking surprises. FBI Butler and Colter form a funny and masculine duo in this thriller that is an excellent entertainment. Don't expect political overtones or social commentary. (B+) GATCHOA: THE LAST MIND Darker in tone than previous films in the Shrek saga, but still highly entertaining, this animated adventure features a candid title character (voiced by Antonio Banderas) who ends up being shocked when he finds out. nine lives out. The film stumbles when it switches to fast-paced action sequences that seem designed for children's short attention spans. But what really works is Banderas' silky role, conveying all the over-the-top cat sweetness that makes it clear he's totally into the joke. PG (for action/violence, humor/rough language and some scary moments). 102 minutes
