Cook Review: ‘Bones And All Is Delicious Hybrid
You just don't see enough fucking romance.
At least I didn't eat anything until I ate the surprisingly appealing Bones and All.
Part horror, part journey and part romance, the film works on all these levels.
It's a reunion movie since it reunites the director Luca Guadagnino and the actor. Timothée Chalamet from Call Me By Your Name.
But we don't immediately meet the character of Chalamet. We see a young Maren (Taylor Russell, The Waves) living with her father in a run-down house. It's a house full of secrets, one of which is so shocking that Maren's father flies away and abandons her, but leaves her a written explanation of who he is and why he left.
Maren becomes a detective and soon meets a man who sympathizes with her. This eccentric older woman, who calls herself Sally in the third person, is played with chilling perfection by Mark Rylance (Outfit).
Though Maren and Sally form an uninteresting friendship, Maren continues on her journey in search of more information about her past. She then meets Leigh (Chalamet) and they begin a tentative romance while continuing to travel together.
I know I don't fully understand all of this, but the film deserves to be seen by the least experienced public. But I'll tell you what, if you like Hungry and Let the Believers in you might like this one too.
Maren's relationship with Lee continues to evolve. He was more real than her, and she learned a lot from him and his more brutal approach to survival.
The acting is great and the characters are interesting. Several scenes, including the one where Maren is confronted with her past, are shocking and sometimes gory. This is not for children and the faint of heart.
To some viewers, this may seem like a movie that doesn't know what it wants to be. This is a true hybrid that will appeal to a wide audience. After watching Warm Bodies, I thought, "That was amazing."
Good Appetite.
