Stars at Noon is a film directed by Claire Denis and starring Margaret Qualley and Joe Alwyn .

Prerequisites:

Film critic

Stars at Noon is a film that knows how to create its own tone. He lets his actors maneuver, gives way to a building story, and gives it several twists and turns in a story full of intrigue and politics that interweave with the personal dramas of its characters.

The director has a style, a style that is both frankly honest and skillfully deceptive, because at first glance it seems calm and serene.

If you're expecting a classic thriller, Stars at Noon might seem overly dramatic, following two strangers caught in internal and external chaos. The dichotomy of landscape and character is well represented in directions that take an extremely clever approach to deception.

The performance is outstanding, giving the two main characters, played by Margaret Qualley and Joe Alwyn, compelling profiles that are simultaneously bitter, resigned and sensual.

Our opinion

It's a bittersweet story, perhaps a failed thriller, perhaps a never-ending romantic drama that never quite found its genre. This is an interesting film, which is distinguished by good direction and fantastic performances by the two main characters.

Claire Denis (French: [dəni]; born 21 April 1946 in Paris) is a French director and writer. Denise is widely recognized as one of the most powerful female voices in modern world cinema. Her film Beau Travail (1999) is considered a contemporary masterpiece and one of the best films made by women in the history of cinema. Other works include Every Day of Trouble (2001), 35 Shots of Rum (2008), White Stuff (2009) and High Life (2018). His work has had an indelible impact on the identity of European cinema and has touched upon issues of colonial and post-colonial West Africa as well as contemporary France. He is known for his elliptical shooting style and the non-verbal interaction between his protagonists, which he displays in many close-ups that remain mercilessly on the faces and bodies of his actors. The body of the subject in space and the way a certain terrain, weather and color of the landscape affect and interact with the human objects in his films maintain cinematic dominance. Read more
