The Little Mermaid Liveaction Remake Trailer Takes Us Under The Sea

The Little Mermaid Teaser Trailer Includes a Gorgeous Peek at Halle ...

The Little Mermaid remake finally has a trailer. The first trailer for Disney's latest take on the classic cartoon debuted during a mega panel at D23, a Disney-themed Comic Con event taking place in Los Angeles.

This trailer features our first look at Ariel Holly Bailey, the iconic singing mermaid. The trailer is small, there are no other characters. However, he will be joined in the film by an all-star cast, including Melissa McCarthy as the villainous Ursula, Javier Bardem as Ariel's father, King Triton, and David Diggs as everyone's favorite crustacean, Sebastian.

The Little Mermaid was directed by Rob Marshall, who, after gaining international fame with Chicago, became a Disney supporter with Mary Poppins Returns, Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides and Next in the Woods. During the D23 panel, it was revealed that The Little Mermaid will feature four new songs written by Alan Menken Hamilton and Lin-Manuel Miranda.

"I have a special relationship with this movie because when it came out in 1989, we could hear people singing in the movie again," he said. "It feels like destiny."

The film was first announced in 2016, with Miranda serving as producer. Marshall joined the following year, though casting didn't begin until 2019, when Disney tried to figure out how to bring original underwater cartoons to the screen.

Filming was originally supposed to begin in April 2020, but due to the COVID pandemic, it was postponed until principal photography began in January 2021, with the film wrapping in July of that year. It's been over a year since then, but D23 is too good an opportunity not to release the full first trailer.

The Little Mermaid hits theaters May 26, 2023. In the meantime, check out our roundup of our new Disney version of Pinocchio, just released on Disney Plus.
